Psalm 107:6-9

They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress. He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle. Let them give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for men, for He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.

Those who know Christ as Savior have access to the bread of life, living water, and the giver of rest. We shouldn’t wait until we are in distress to partake of these things so readily available to us.

I pray our prodigals, as they cry out to the Lord, are met with all they need to sustain them; even a place to settle and call home!

Psalm 107:6-9

________ was hungry and thirsty, and his/her life ebbed away. Then ________ cried out to the Lord in his/her trouble, and He delivered ________ from his/her distress. He led ________ by a straight way to a city where he/she could settle. Let ________ give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for him/her, for He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.

Ephesians 1:4-7 NLT

Even before He made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in His eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into His own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what He wanted to do, and it gave Him great pleasure. So we praise God for the glorious grace He has poured out on us who belong to His dear Son. He is so rich in kindness and grace that He purchased our freedom with the blood of His Son and forgave our sins. He has showered His kindness on us, along with all wisdom and understanding.

Holy, without fault, adopted, given grace, freedom purchased, forgiven, with kindness showered on us….. all these things are ours, His chosen ones. I can do nothing to sway his thinking about me; it is His decision alone and His pleasure to do it! What amazing thoughts that humble me before Him.

I pray the prodigal will be captured by the thoughts contained in this verse. May they know God has taken pleasure in choosing them to be His and, in turn, live a life humbled before Him!

Isaiah 33:2

O Lord, be gracious to us; we long for you. Be our strength every morning, our salvation in time of distress.

What would I do without God’s grace? Many, many times I have not received what I deserve and it’s because God was gracious towards me.

I pray for the prodigal to long for the Lord; long to be in His presence and have His activity in their lives. As they begin to recognize His love for them and His mercy towards them, that longing should grow. Before they start their day, I pray they recognize that the very breath they breathe is given by Him; may they come to daily depend on His strength and salvation.

Isaiah 33:2

O Lord, be gracious to ________; he/she longs for you. Be ________’s strength every morning, his/her salvation in time of distress.

Psalm 84:11

For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless.

Part of one commentary on this verse says…

“God does not promise to give us everything we think is good, but he will not withhold what is permanently good.”

Our idea of what favor, honor and good means can be totally different than what God sees as honoring us and giving us good things. He is concerned with bringing us to a place where we have a Christ like life, not necessarily our comfort and exaltation.

My prayer for the prodigal today is that they could understand how the concept of obedience and blessing works in their lives. That they would have “Kingdom” understanding in all they do.

Psalm 84:11

For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does He withhold from ________ whose walk is blameless.

2 Peter 1:3

His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness.

I have no resources or power to live a godly life on my own. But, by the power of the Holy Spirit, I have everything I need to accomplish it. When we come to know Him, access to this power is ours.

I pray that the prodigal would recognize God has given them everything they need to live this life and in a godly way. The world may not recognize these things as being “enough” but they are. As they come to know Him deeper, may they tap into the Holy Spirit’s power to live a life of godliness.

2 Peter 1:3

His divine power has given __________ everything he/she needs for life and godliness through his/her knowledge of Him who called __________ by His own glory and goodness.

Proverbs 10:25 NLT

When the storms of life come, the wicked are whirled away, but the godly have a lasting foundation.

I like to believe that the foundation we have given the prodigal, as parents, will serve them during the storms of life. God is faithful and will recall to their minds His Word and His loving kindness, things that have been planted in their hearts over years of our faithfully sowing into them.

I pray that these very foundational seeds will take root by a watering from tears of repentance and spring to life, as God is faithful to shine His light on them. May the storm they find themselves in at present not carry them away because of the solid foundation on which they stand.

Proverbs 10:25 NLT

When the storms of life come, the wicked are whirled away, but _________ has a lasting foundation.

Psalm 44:4-8 NLT

You are my King and my God. You command victories for Israel. Only by your power can we push back our enemies; only in your name can we trample our foes. I do not trust in my bow; I do not count on my sword to save me. You are the one who gives us victory over our enemies; you disgrace those who hate us. O God, we give glory to you all day long and constantly praise your name.

God is for the prodigal…. He commands victories for them. I love the thought of this. Each prodigal is trusting in something other than God for victory in their life; their own strength, knowledge, money, skill. Yet, the Father still goes to battle for them and commands victory over their life.

My prayer for the prodigal is that they recognize the enemy for who he is and depend fully on God to push back and trample him. As they begin to see God as their Champion, and trust in His name alone, may praise be on their lips.

Psalm 44:4-8 NLT

You are ________’s King and his/her God. You command victories for ________. Only by your power can ________ push back his/her enemies; only in your name can ________ trample his/her foes. ________ does not trust in his/her bow; ________ does not count on his/her sword to save him/her. You are the one who gives ________ victory over his/her enemies; you disgrace those who hate him/her. O God, ________ gives glory to you all day long and constantly praises your name.

Numbers 6:24-26

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.

When we bless God, at most it is us attributing praise to Him, it’s our words reflected up to Him the best we know how. But, when He blesses us, His favor rests on us and it is powerful. In these verses, the fruit of that favor is His grace. When His face is turned towards us there is peace.

My prayer for the prodigal this day is that the Lord’s face will indeed shine on them, that He will be gracious to them and His favor rest on them. More than anything they need His peace right now, and I pray they feel it with great certainty.

Numbers 6:24-26

The Lord bless ________ and keep him/her; the Lord make His face shine upon _________ and be gracious to him/her; the Lord turn His face toward _________ and give him/her peace.

2 Timothy 2:11-13

Here is a trust worthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; If we endure, we will also reign with him, If we disown him, he will also disown us; If we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself.

What a wonderful thought that our faith in Jesus Christ seals our future with Him. We have been given a free will and ability to choose who we will worship, serve, and give our life to. God won’t force us to stay in relationship with Him if we disown Him and walk away. Yet, when the believer is struggling and their faith is weak, God will not give up on them. What He has promised because of the blood of Christ, He will uphold.

I am praying the prodigal never turns his back on God to walk away but, in those times of intense struggle, they sense His faithful hand on their life and are encouraged.

2 Timothy 2:11-13

Here is a trust worthy saying: If ________ dies with Him, he/she will also live with Him; If _________ endures, he/she will also reign with Him, If _________ disowns Him, He will also disown him/her; If ________ is faithless, He will remain faithful, for He cannot disown Himself.

Psalm 18:6-15

In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From His temple He heard my voice; my cry came before Him, into His ears. The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook; they trembled because He was angry. Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from His mouth, burning coals blazed out of it. He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under His feet. He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind. He made darkness his covering, His canopy around Him— the dark rain clouds of the sky. Out of the brightness of His presence clouds advanced, with hailstones and bolts of lightning. The Lord thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. He shot His arrows and scattered my enemies, great bolts of lightning and routed them. The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at your rebuke, O Lord, at the blast of breath from your nostrils.

This is the longest passage we will have on any one day, but what wonderful imagery in these verses… I had to include them all! We should never forget God’s power to scatter our enemies and the enemies of our prodigal. Our Father is fiercely loyal to us.

When the prodigal cries out to him, He will come to them mounted on the cherubim, flying in to rescue. I’m praying the prodigal reaches the place soon when they will cry out. They won’t be disappointed!
