Psalm 91:1-2

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ”He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

Part of the meaning of the word “rest” here is – an undetermined amount of time. When we choose to dwell in His presence, rest will be ours for as long as we stay in that sheltered place. If you are weary today, rest in Him and the fact that He loves you.

Pray for your prodigal to have complete trust in the God who loves them and find in Him a refuge and fortress. Though life may bring circumstances out of their control, let’s pray they will always be at rest in Him.

Psalm 91:1-2

_______, who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. ________ will say of the Lord, ”He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

Romans 8:35, 37 NLT

Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean He no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.

Overwhelming victory – more than conquerors, they are interchangeable! This victory is ours and also belongs to the prodigal. Our prodigals can have overwhelming victory over the enemy’s schemes and we can be victorious over our uncertainty concerning them. Begin to envision your prodigal as more than a conqueror. As they identify as His, it is impossible for them to be separated from Him…Hallelujah!

Romans 8:35, 37 NLT

Can anything ever separate ________ from Christ’s love? Does it mean He no longer loves him/her if he/she has trouble or calamity, or is persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ________’s through Christ, who loved him/her.

2 Chronicles 7:14

If my people who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

humility – a modest or low view of one’s own importance

Healing a life that is seemingly out of control has to start with humility. Seeking His face actually works as a mirror showing us what we really look like. God’s face has the ability to reflect our true heart. It brings conviction and humility.

These words to Solomon are for the people of Israel, yet so important in a prodigal’s life as well. God will set his face against those who are proud and refuse to turn from sin. He lovingly allows us to suffer the consequences of our choices because it has a way of humbling us and softening the heart.

I pray the prodigal will be humble before the Lord, seek His face, turn from whatever sin they’ve been living in and walk in healing.

2 Chronicles 7:14

If __________, who is called by my name, will humble himself/herself and pray and seek my face and turn from his/her wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive ___________’s sin and will heal him/her.

Psalm 33:18

But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear Him, on those whose hope is in His unfailing love.

I’m not sure if our prodigals have a healthy fear of the Lord, but I pray that they do. Having faith in His son and hope in His unfailing love positions them to have His attention.

I love the thought of God’s eyes being on the prodigal. He’s aware of their stubbornness and straying, yet will not take His eyes off of them. Their situation may still be unchanging and frustrating to us humans who love them, but we can be sure His gaze is on them!

Psalm 33:18

But the eyes of the Lord are on _________ who fears Him, on ________ whose hope is in His unfailing love.

Habakkuk 3:19

The Sovereign Lord is my strength; He makes my feet like the feet of a deer, He enables me to go on the heights.

As a prodigal traverses the pit of whatever they have gotten themselves into, climbing out can look daunting, even impossible. I pray the prodigal will feel the strength of the Lord as they make a move up out of that pit and that their feet are sure and steady on a possibly rocky path. Let’s pray they will have the resolve to escape the traps of the enemy and that they keep focused on the “heights” the Father is leading them toward.

Habakkuk 3:19

The Sovereign Lord is ________’s strength; He makes ________’s feet like the feet of a deer, He enables him/her to go on the heights.

Hebrews 10:21-22 NLT

And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting Him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.

God not only wants to wash us clean of sin but our guilt regarding it as well. The blood and water escaping from Christ’s body as it hung on the cross is what cleanses us from a guilty conscience. It not only bought our freedom from penalty of sin but provides a cleansing from the guilt associated with that sin.

I pray the prodigal will not fear drawing near the cross and will, as they stand in the presence of their Savior, be cleansed from any guilt. May they quickly recognize forgiveness and acceptance there.

Hebrews 10:21-22 NLT

And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, let _______ go right into the presence of God with a sincere heart fully trusting Him. For ________’s guilty conscience has been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make him/her clean, and ________’s body has been washed with pure water.

Ephesians 3:20

Now all glory to God, who is able, through His mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.

With God’s power at work, through the Holy Spirit, the believer will be amazed at what they can do; more than we could even ask or think! It is God working through us that accomplishes these things…. He needs us to be actively involved.

The prodigal is probably struggling just to have enough faith to believe that their situation will change. Let’s pray they begin to dig deep and draw from the power within them. As they do, God promises to accomplish infinitely more than they could ask or think!

Ephesians 3:20

Now all glory to God, who is able, through His mighty power at work within ________, to accomplish infinitely more than he/she might ask or think.

Psalm 139:23-24

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

David was willing to have God not only explore his heart but even check his thoughts. He was also willing to be put to the test regarding his love for and obedience to God.

test – to prove, examine, scrutinize, put on trial

I have to ask myself, “Would I want my thoughts and intentions to be put on trial? Am I willing for God to look intently into my heart and mind, and point out what’s hidden there?” It sounds like spiritual open-heart surgery to me.

I pray the prodigal would be willing to submit themselves to the skillful hands of the Father for some exploratory surgery; that they wouldn’t fear God’s “testing” their thoughts and intentions. May they prove to harbor nothing that would offend the Lord.

Psalm 139:23-24

Search __________, O God, and know his/her heart; test him/her and know his/her anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in him/her, and lead ________ in the way everlasting.

Philippians 2:13

For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose.

It takes submission on our part but, if we will allow Him, God is able to work in us propelling us forward with a will and actions that are clearly for His glory.

I would love to see the prodigal living with a God-focused will. Let’s pray they’ll submit to the Father allowing Him to work in and through them for His good purpose.

Philippians 2:13

For it is God who works in _________ to will and to act according to His good purpose.

Isaiah 65:24 NLT

I will answer them before they even call to me. While they are still talking about their needs, I will go ahead and answer their prayers!

I love this promise. God knows what we are about to pray, even a whisper in desperation, and He has already acted upon it and is working out the answer. The answer may not actually appear until later, but that doesn’t mean He isn’t actively working on that answer as we wait.

This should be an encouragement to your heart regarding the prodigal. It’s a promise that, as the prodigal calls out to Him, an answer is on it’s way… He already knows their need.

Isaiah 65:24 NLT

I will answer ________ before he/she even calls to me. While ________ is still talking about his/her needs, I will go ahead and answer his/her prayers!
