Romans 12:12

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

The church in Rome was under persecution. Paul’s advice to them in this chapter includes this short verse with a challenge. Here are some thoughts from Matthew Henry on this verse:

“Rejoicing in hope. God is worshipped and honored by our hope and trust in him, especially when we rejoice in that hope….. Patient in tribulation. Thus also God is served, not only by working for him when he calls us to work, but by sitting still quietly when he calls us to suffer….. Observe, those that rejoice in hope are likely to be patient in tribulation. It is a believing prospect of the joy set before us that bears up the spirit under all outward pressure.…. Faithful in prayer. Prayer is a friend to hope and patience, and we do in it serve the Lord.”

Because of God’s great love for the prodigal, we have hope; and why not have some joy while resting in that hope! There is no excuse for being unfaithful in prayer. Prayers can be continually whispered as we go about our day.
