2 Samuel 7:25-26a

And now, Lord God, keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised, so that your name will be great forever.

These verses are part of David’s prayer of thanksgiving after Nathan has given him a message from the Lord. God reminded David of all the plans He had for him since choosing him when he was just a shepherd boy; plans for him, his sons, and the kingdom of Israel.

I love that David desired God’s keeping of those promises not so that his name would be great but so that God’s name would be great.

This is just a portion of David’s prayer of thanks. Earlier, verse 18 says, “Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and prayed….” No wonder he was a man after God’s own heart!

God has plans for the prodigal, specific promises He has made to each one. We may not know all of those promises but I pray the prodigal does; that they recall them often, sit before Him in prayer and have a heart that desires God’s name to be great forever.
