John 7:37-38

“If anyone is thirsty let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.”

There are many references in the Old Testament to springs and living water; instances where water was brought forth and quenched the thirst (Isaiah 55:1), dry land becoming springs of water (Isaiah 41:18), or drawing water with joy from the wells of salvation. (Isaiah 12:3)

“It became Jewish custom on the last day of the feast to have a “pouring out of water” – Libatio aquae. A gold vessel was filled from the pool of Siloam and carried to the temple altar where it was poured out, before the Lord, with much joy and celebration”. (Dr. John Lightfoot)

Jesus probably used this moment as a visual of how the Holy Spirit would be living water pouring out of His believers. What a powerful picture that must have been for those who grasped it’s meaning.

We, who are followers of Christ, are the recipients of this source of living water. It should be our desire daily, to “flow out” on those who are hopeless, dry, thirsty  and in need of a touch from the Father.

Let’s pray for the prodigal today, who is probably thirsty and in need of refreshing from the Lord, that whatever has stopped the flow within them will be opened up once more to pour out His goodness on all who come in contact with them.
