Ephesians 5:15-18

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise, but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

The church, in Paul’s day was facing major persecution. We, too, are living in evil days. God asks us to use our heads, be wise and act according to what He wants done, taking advantage of every opportunity to show Him to the world. The only way to understand what God wants is to be in intimate conversations with Him and by drawing on the power of the Holy Spirit to direct our thinking. Just as alcohol controls the actions of the one who is drunk, we should let the Holy Spirit be the one who is controlling us because we are filled up with Him.

My prayer for the prodigal is, that they recognize we are living in evil days; that they act with wisdom, knowing God’s will, because they have sought it out. I pray they are not being mastered by alcohol but by the Holy Spirit.
