1 Samuel 12:22

For the sake of His great name, the Lord will not reject His people, because the Lord was pleased to make you His own.

This chapter is Samuel’s farewell speech. The people have asked for a king so Samuel steps out of his main role. It’s a reminder to Israel of God’s love for them, how He was faithful to them even when they were not faithful to Him. He starts wrapping up the chapter with the above statement. God made a covenant with Abraham and He was not going to renege on it. Even though His people had been rebellious and unfaithful he would not reject them. They ended up in captivity more than once and God threatened to wipe them out a few times but He never did. In case we think it was anything the people did to deserve life, Samuel lets us know quickly… it was for the “sake of His great name” that he let them live. Through the blood of Jesus Christ, we who believe in Him are in covenant with God. As our prodigals are waking up to how much God loves them, and how He has been faithful through their rebellious living, I pray the thought that — “the Lord was pleased to make you His own” — would touch their hearts. As much as they (and we) have failed Him, for the sake of His great name He continues with faithfulness towards us.
