Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.
I’ve watched my children over the years compete in track events. I found myself praying they would not stumble or catch a toe on a hurdle, all the while cheering them on from the stands.
The spiritual “race” we are in is a marathon, not a sprint and there are many opportunities to stumble along the way. Each of us must determine to run the race set out for us, keeping our eyes on Jesus. Surrounding ourselves with friends that are like minded helps keep us focused as we cheer each other on with encouragement and intercession. That “great cloud of witnesses” is in the spiritual realm…. can you imagine the saints (maybe even Peter or Paul) cheering us on?
I pray the prodigal will develop a marathon mentality, determined to finish the race strong and for Christ’s sake. May we be their greatest cheerleader and encourager. I also pray they will be able to “throw off” those things they find holding them down, tempting them back into the pit, and find freedom to run without restraint!
Therefore, since __________ is surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let him/her throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let __________ run with perseverance the race marked out for him/her.
